Currently, our money in the United States is printed with the phrase 'In God We Trust.' Since FDR removed us from the gold standard in 1933, during the Great Depression, our faith in the value of these slips of cotton paper has been truly 'In God.' To those who wish to replace or remove 'God' from our currency, what would take its place?

I do not pose this question as simply "What words should be printed on the dollar?", but "What should we as Americans put our faith into to support the collectively perceived value of the dollar?"

On its surface it would almost seem as a contradiction that the thing we exchange (and by extension, its electronic counterpart) for goods and services everyday would be valued on the trust we, as a nation, put into a deity. However, it is something that we, as free people, seem to be exactly certain of what it is worth. Not only do we trade it, but we sometimes kill, steal and lie for, and even give away freely for things we assign more importance than ourselves.

Christians (the true kind) 'render unto Caesar that which is Caesar's.' They also render unto God that which is God's. A clever minister has even said that God will reward the man who puts trust in Him; and, the man who earns a dollar, ultimately puts his trust in God for the successful ability to work for it.

Ministers and community organizers alike should pay close attention. In my opinion, the functions you serve to society are mirrors of each other. 'In God We Trust' will remain on the dollar until a replacement is decided upon; one that can be determined by a majority of Americans.

For those that are offended by the phrase, I dare you to stop using cash. If you are so offended, it shouldn't be that hard with debit cards being as common as they are. The E-Dollar has nothing printed on it, and your debit card contains no mention of any deity. The only things you can't buy without 'In God We Trust' are illegal, anyway.

I for one believe that God is less interested in receiving our dollars, and more interested in what we do for, and with them. As long as there are people who place this kind of trust in God, and similarly in our currency, I will support keeping the phrase 'In God We Trust' on the dollar.

Great article, especially the title. Too many Americans give lip service to "In God We Trust", not understanding and taking to heart the importance of this statement. If everyone put more focus on this valuable and timeless phrase, we'd all be better off.

Paul and Mom--Thank you both for your kind words. One of the issues with money management is that we can easily get lost in the details. It's the nature of money even if we're heading in a positive direction. It helps every now and again if we stop and look reality in the face, at least to remind ourselves what it is we're trying to work out in the big picture. This seems to be one of those moments.

Paul, as I wrote you last week, I have your post "Frugal Fix: Revive your Cell Phone or Electronic Devices from Water Damage" posted on my website. It's so incredibly valuable to anyone under any topic!

Kevin, I appreciate that you stress the idea that while good stewardship of our material wealth is expected of us, it should not be our ultimate focus. The material wealth should be considered gifts from God for our use and enjoyment, but our focus should always remain on our eternal life in Heaven. Good stewardship is a small part of our work to preserve our greatest gift; our salvation. Thank you for illustrating the fact that we are all, after all, only human and subject to the will of God.

Well said Kevin. Part of the reason that I'm on the Debt Free journey we've embarked on was the feeling that I was not being a good steward of God's wonderful gifts to me. I've done very well in my professional career and tried often to demonstrate that to others by the things I surrounded myself with. I have been so much more blessed by striving to live a life with a long term blessing and seeking what God would have for me, and it's amazing how other things fall into place.

Fantastic post Kevin I look forward to reading more of your stuff.

Baker--Thanks for the read and the generous comment. I can't claim credit for the Reagan quote, or any of the presidential quotes. Matt added those and in doing so he expanded the dimension of the original post, proving once again that two heads are better than one (especially if one of the heads involved is mine ;-) ).

Ronald Reagan was my favorite president by a wide margin, so it's a real honor that Matt attached the quote to the post.

BTW, your site is outstanding, hard to believe it's only been around a couple of months.

Are you enjoying Australia???

Thanks,
Kevin

Kevin,

Nice to see you on DFA! Articles like this really help me personally refocus my thinking on to what is really important. This sort of topic DOES have a lot to do with personal finance.

In addition, you get every bigger KUDOS for using one of my favorite Reagan quotes.

I look forward to reading more of your work!
