Blogging Your Passion – Make Money Blogging

04.29.2011 by Matt Jabs //

There are so many people that hate their jobs and truly loathe getting up and going to work every day.  I used to be one of them.

So why do so many people continue doing something that makes them so unhappy?  Debt usually plays a huge roll.  A simple question to ask yourself is, “If you didn’t have any debt, and thus only needed a fraction of your current monthly income, would you still get up and go work at your current job every day?” The answer is usually a resounding NO!

Besides being passionate about eliminating debt, I am also hugely passionate about figuring out how to earn money doing creative work I love… and helping others do the same.  If you hate your job and need a change, then why not create that change?  No one is going to do it for you!

At the end of February 2011 I left the working world to become a full-time entrepreneur.  It is a risk, but I had a plan.  I have been blogging since January of 2009 and have been able to build up several sites with a decent amount of traffic.  Now my job is to consistently build those sites and to turn them into revenue producing assets that help people and provide for my family.  My goals include helping others, being able to work from anywhere with an Internet connection, earn money at all hours of the day rather than trading time for money, and to create something I’m passionate about.

Who do I learn from?  Well, a lot of it has been trial and error over the years, but because I recently went full-time, I’ve been receiving coaching from guys who have already become very successful at what I’m trying to do.  Enter Bob Lotich of christianpf.com and Jonathan Milligan of cpacareercoach.com.

Blogging Your Passion

Bob and Jonathan have created a website called BloggingYourPassion.com and – with the help of Andy Traub of andytraub.com – are about to release a comprehensive webinar product to help you and I create, build, maintain, and earn money by blogging about things we are passionate about.  I’m telling you about this product today because I’m sick and tired of seeing people stuck in debt and stuck in jobs they hate.  YOU DON’T HAVE TO keep doing it!  Break out and start building something you’re proud of.

Bob and Jonathan have kindly offered a $50 discount to the first 50 people who sign up, and the webinar is only available to 100 people.  So if you’re looking to make a change and have been looking for an excuse to get started… make this your excuse.

Check out the life changing 5 part Blogging Your Passion webinar and use coupon code “DFA” (without the quotes) for a shot at the $50 discount if you’re one of the first 50 to sign up.

Here is a video of me talking about the course and the idea behind it.

How To Make Money Blogging

03.02.2010 by Matt Jabs //

My Side Hustle

Every so often I make mention of my “side hustle” here on DFA and how it earns money that enables us to repay debt much faster.  Recently several DFA readers have contacted me wanting to know exactly what my “side hustle” is and how I earn money with it.

Well, you’re reading my side hustle now… DebtFreeAdventure.com is the side hustle that is brings in our extra income.  How much extra?  I don’t really want to list specific numbers but suffice to say that it earned enough this month to cover our 1st and 2nd mortgage payments!

Make money blogging

Luckily it is not necessary for me to write a detailed run down of how to start a blog or how to earn money with a blog because others have already done it.  In fact, I would be remiss if I didn’t point you to an awesome new resource to help you do this yourself… if you so desire.

For the last several months Pete over at BibleMoneyMatters.com has been busting his butt to compile a guide that aims to help people make money blogging.  Why listen to Pete?  In just 2 short years he catapulted himself from blogging beginner to a blogger earning enough to replace his wife’s full-time job.

In his own words,

“Over the past 2 years I’ve been blogging 5-6 days a week, generating over 800 pages of content, 6000+ comments and over 1.5 million page views. My site has become more popular than I ever dreamed it could be, and I feel blessed that the site has grown to a point where it is now able to replace my wife’s day job income. That means we’ll be able to afford for her to stay home with our children, which is even more important now that we have our first child on the way!“

Benefits from of earning money blogging

Earning money from blogging is not easy, but it affords you some very rewarding benefits… like:

  • Freedom to work from anywhere – I can work from anywhere, as long as I have a computer (or even a smartphone) with an Internet connection.
  • Control over your own income – The amount I earn is in direct proportion to how hard I work… this is not the case with my full-time job where I earn the same amount regardless of effort.
  • Income diversification – The alternate income acts as a hedge against possible job loss… losing your current job will hurt less if you have developed alternate sources of income.
  • Build savings and/or repay debt faster – Our debt is disappearing much faster thanks to the earnings from DebtFreeAdventure.com.

Another non-monetary benefit is that DFA also allows me to write about my passions.  Even if the site was earning nothing I would continue to write… the money is just a bonus.  Writing about personal finances helps me learn more, stay focused and accountable to our debt reduction plan, and help others along the way.

How can you get started?

Have you been wanting to do what Pete has done, and what I’m doing?  Are you passionate about a subject, eager to learn more, help others, and earn money along the way?  If so then buy Pete’s ebook and learn in one day what it took Pete 2 years to nail down.

If you want to get started blogging for money, check out Pete’s Blueprint For How to Make Money with a Blog.

I have read the ebook myself and highly recommend it to people looking to start an earning blog of their own.

30 Personal Finance Bloggers Lose 142 Pounds!

08.09.2009 by Matt Jabs //

Blogger Weight Loss Challenge Concludes

The Challenge was the brain child of Baker from Man Vs. Debt.

I am lucky enough to have the pleasure of talking with Baker on a regular basis, and because I know there are a lot of other people eagerly following his adventure I thought it only right to get a few words directly from the man himself.

Despite being crazy busy hopping from continent to continent, growing MVD, and working on intense projects at both Get Rich Slowly and Wisebread… always willing to contribute, Baker jumped at the chance and had this to say:

When I first announced the Personal Finance Bloggers Weight Loss Challenge in late May, I was only hoping that I could stir up at least 10 other bloggers who would want to join.  Over the next couple of days, I was shocked at the number of people who were excited to particpate!  Within a week the number had climbed to 30!

Initially, I thought a friendly “competition” would be an amazing way to not only pile on accountability, but to also strengthen ties within the great blogging community we have!  So many of us spend a large portion of our free time studying, learning, and helping spread personal finance content, but all to often we neglect our own health.  I was tired of it!

Out of the gates, several people jumped out to fantastic starts! Within the first couple of weeks I had shed an incredible amount of pounds from simply increasing the amount of time I spent walking/jogging combined with conscious eating habits.  Relying on the others for inspiration was a key part of my motivation!

The community aspect came into full effect once I moved overseas.  I had been a little naive thinking I could keep up with everything while traveling across the world.  Luckily, Matt Jabs, Laura, Mrs. Micah, Shane, MFD, and Krista were able to step up and keep the challenge going strong!

Towards the end I personally faded as I got lazy and lost some connection while traveling with the community (which had been such a source of strength for me).  Overall, though, I still managed to lose 12 pounds, which I’m convinced would not have happened without this challenge.  Most importantly, though, this process has renewed my belief in the power of accountability and community.

Hearing that all 30 bloggers combined to lose a total of 142 pounds is freakin’ awesome! The “challenge” has far exceed any expectations I had set for it over two months ago.  I’m honored to have been able to participate with such a great group of people!

Thanks for getting everyone together Adam… what a great team effort!

So What About the Results!

As previously mentioned — 142 total pounds were lost in 9 weeks displaying an amazing feat of teamwork and fortitude.  Everyone did a great job — and the PF community, once again, was able to show their unique and powerful ability to work together toward a common goal.

Despite a couple of weddings and other life altering events that called some to focus their time and attention elsewhere, participation was high and everyone can come away from this competition with a lot of positive momentum.
